April Currently!!!

Ok I'm linking up with Oh Boy 4th grade! for the April Linky! I love these!

One of my dogs CONSTANTLY LICKS EVERYTHING! I don't know why it bothers me so much but it's annoying. He actually licked through my leather couch! Grrrrr....

I drove by the construction site and my new house is almost done! I can't wait to move. Now all I need to do is buy some new furniture because I refuse to bring this furniture (crap) with me. Seriously I'm not bringing it....

Ugh....happy yet sad it's back to the grind tomorrow. Not just for me but for my kids too which my drill sergeant mom is back to get the troops ready in the morning...good times....NOT

Never enough time...I'm in grad school ( on top of everything else) plus I like to train and I just never seem to find enough time....How am I going to go on vacation with this schedule?

As far as my TPT or blog advice I am new so who am I to give advice BUT.....I do know that patience is essential. Just when things seem slow suddenly things perk up. Its peeks and valleys for sure. :-)

Let's Get Acquainted Linky!!

I'm linking up with Latoya from Flying Into First Grade for her Let's get Acquainted Linky

Oh this is fun!!!

My initials are S-L E so here we go....

S- Salad! love salad!  I am not a vegetarian at all but I simply LOVE salad. In fact, if it were my last meal I would choose a salad ( and some yummy bread to go with it!)

L- Laugh!I know it's simple but I really do love to laugh. I love a good comedy such as Bridesmaids and I feel so much better after a good laugh!

E-  Excercise! Ok this "E" was E-Z! I love to exercise! I know most people are thinking "gag me!" but I have been a fitness nut for years and the older I get the more I love it. I love any type of exercise. I teach special ed and my weeks are hectic so a good work out honestly relieves tons of stress and makes me feel better. I did P90X for my 40th birthday and it was awesome! It's almost as good as a glass of wine......almost!
This was the Hot Chocolate Run in San Diego. :-)

Sentence Helpers Trial Run!

This student used color coding to help form her sentences.

This student chose to use the word "see" in each sentence

So, I have been struggling with providing my students independent writing experiences since...well forever! I have such a variety of levels in my class but there are two students who are reading and are ready to start writing sentences. I have been working on these printable writing templates for a while and yesterday was the first day I tried them out with my students and I was sooo excited! I had not planned on color coding but when one of my students was picking her words we decided to circle the words for each sentence in the same color. It really helped her remember which words she would be using to complete her sentence. Once my students are trained in the use of these forms it is really going to help them in spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary. I made sure the first box has all capital letters as those are the sentence starters and each word in the last box has a period. My plan to create a graduated system to that eventually as they become more proficient I will take those tools (reminders) away. I'll be working more on my sheets and if anyone is interested in trying some out just leave me your email and I will send a few samples! I love sharing ideas!

UPDATE: I have since made three sets of these and I absolutely love them! You can find them in my TPT store here.... Sentence Helpers

Listening to: Well, I only watch two show on television and I love American Idol but why are the judges so annoying. I love Mariah as a singer but as a judge.....not so much!

Loving: Yeah for the weekend! Only two weeks until spring break! OH wait...I just realized it's daylight savings time this weekend.....grrrrr

Thinking: I really need to sleep more....I never sleep I go to bed way to late and get up way to early! I think it's a sign of getting old. :-/

Wanting: to have a quick smooth day and begin my weekend. Even though report cards are due Monday...blah!

Needing: With grad school and TPT and being a mom and working I have been struggling with my work outs but with the nicer weather I am telling myself I should just go for a run.

Like*Love*Hate*- I love all things summer and I am from San Diego and will always miss it as I am stuck in the desert in Vegas (for now) and I hate fishy things especially salmon....yuck!

My first currently! Hope I didn't screw it up! I seriously just figured this out! WOOT WOOT!

P.S. I really do love Mariah Carey as  singer .....not so much as a judge. I am sorry if this offends anyone. :-/

Ok. not entirely sure how this all goes...but here's to my first "link up". Sounds fun!

1. The MUSIC I listen to is pretty much everything! I love 80's, pop, dance music, almost anything. I like country but I really never listen to it. I also love reggae (how can you be from San Diego and not?)
2. The MENU item I always go to is salad! I love love love salad. BUT--I can not eat anything white and creamy so my salads are always oil based.

3. My must have MANAGEMENT practice is planning and preparation! It has to be planned and well organized. If not, all instruction goes out the window. Of course we all know things don't always go as planned in our minds (ahhhh) and I learn from that too! I can't tell you how many times I said to myself....."That soooo did not go as I planned!" As far as behavior management I am a huge believer in positive reinforcement and the CHAMPS method. I have been using CHAMPS for three years and I have seen excellent results. I have used it in general education as well as special education. Kids respond to praise so much more than "consequences".

THE GLOVES!!!!

So this is the kind of day I had today! If you are a special ed teacher you are familiar with these lovely items! I had a poor kid who is non-verbal have a complete melt down today. He was throwing items, his pants that were 3 sizes too big were falling down and half of the lunch room saw his behind, all while he was flailing about and making random noises! This kiddo is spitter so because we were not allowing him to throw items he decided to spit everywhere! YUK!  Finally after about two hours and phone calls (notice the plural) home he calmed down a bit. It's been a week I tell you! I seriously think it's a full moon. Off to the gym to regroup! Hope everyone is having a super week and did not have to get "the gloves" out

Unique Learning Systems....

So this year my class was selected to participate in an ipad pilot program. We received 5 new ipads for our classroom .....yay!

As part of the pilot program we are using a standards based curriculum ( yes, I said the word curriculum) designed specifically for children with special needs. This weekend I attended my first official training and HOLY COW! I am so excited! When I made the transition from teaching first grade general education to teaching in a self contained classroom the first thing I asked my principal was what curriculum I follow.....he basically said, "whatever you want". Uh.....excuse me? This did not sit well and since then I have been searching and making things and combing bits of pieces of this and that and adding in some functional curriculum and hoping that I was doing the right thing. Well, so far I am super impressed with Unique Learning Systems. It has meaning and it's functional and academic and incredibly differentiated and it does so much to include EVERYONE regardless of the disability. I am still in the preliminary stages of  implementation but so far it's amazing and I will have more more to post in the coming months......stay tuned! For those of you that are already using ULS please feel free to comment and provide suggestions. It's a lot to take in at first!

Oh....and here are some photos of my kids using the lessons. You can see in the photos the consistent use of photos and differentiation in material. Thank you Unique!

Data tracking by use of pre and post assessments.

Lessons differentiated by use of pictures! Love it!

My Donors Choose Items!

New Writing Center!
New Book Case for my Library!

Over the summer I applied for some items from Donorschoose.org and it took a few months but here are two of the items donated to my classroom! I can't believe that people are so generous and donated the money so that my class could purchase these wonderful items. If you have not done so already, I highly recommend visiting www.donorschoose.org to either request some items or even make a donation! It was totally worth it and my kids were so excited to receive the new items. In addition to the above items we also received writing journals and adaptive writing paper.

Our Class Valentine Hand Heart!

This is the card our class made for Valentines Day this year! I saw the idea on Pinterest but it was in different colors and it was for a Martin Luther King Jr. activity. I decided to use red and I made a card for our families. The card was made on my MacBook  using iphoto and it was super easy! Taking the picture on the other hand was NOT easy! Trying to get this many kiddos with special needs to stand still was quite a task! Just when you think you had one back.....another one would slip away! It took a while but I am sooooo happy with the results! Love Love Love it!
