Penguin Eggs!

I've been waiting until the weather was cold to post these adorable penguin eggs! I have made these a few times in my special education class and they always come out so cute! It's SUPER easy.

All that you need to make these penguins is:

  • hard boiled eggs
  • carrots
  • black olives
  • a knife
  • toothpicks to hold it all together!

You can see from the photos there are many ways to make these. We just get creative each year. Last year we cut the entire egg in half so they were flat but this year we kept the egg whole so that the penguins were standing.

This year I moved to a new school and I had visited the school previously to take some photos. I was not really into the pink and red so I redecorated the room and here are some of the photos. I bought this contact paper at Target for about $4.99 and I love it! It's so easy to use and it peel off. It is so much better than the ugly industrial book shelves used by the school district. I got a little contact paper crazy and even covered my file folder holders!

It's Black and White!

New Classroom Theme....

Since I will be moving to middle school this year I had to sadly (sniffle) say goodbye to my oh so cute jungle themed classroom decorations. BUT....I am super excited to design my new room with black and white. Earlier I posted BEFORE pics of the room and next month I will post AFTER pics, but in the meantime here are some of the ideas I plan on implementing. It's going to be all black and white. There is one wall that is painted this horrid teal color so I was pretty limited with my color choices but I LOVE all of the new black and white options! I found these file cabinets on Pinterest that had quite the makeover. SOOO much better than that horrible gray 1970's look!

These name plates are FREE on TPT under Ella Jane!
Free Name Tags

I also found this awesome calendar set on TPT and Ella Jane was kind enough to make it a bit more mature by removing some of the cute clipart. This can be found at Ella Jane I plan on using these for signs and any other types of displays. I am super excited and can't wait to start fixing up my new room!

FREE-Special Education Morning Work.

Previously I had created and posted two pages of morning work that I had created. Well.....I have been working hard ( in between grad school and kids and moving) and FINALLY I have finished my packet. I created this packet with my own students in mind. It really bothers me when not all of my students are able to participate just because they are unable to physically write! So...I tried my best to find alternative methods of including them in participating in morning work. In this packet there are a few symbols to help students and teachers complete the forms. I used a highlighter symbol when you may use a highlighter to complete. I used a little pencil symbol on the forms that can be written on,  and I used a picture of letter tiles on the forms where the student may complete with tiles. You may download this 16 page packet free in my TPT store or or by clicking the below link! Enjoy!

New Classroom New Job New House!

So, many changes have been going on lately and one of them is I am making the switch from elementary to middle school! I am really excited and really nervous. I have NEVER taught middle school, BUT I have had many of the students from previous years so it will be awesome to see them again. I am including a picture of my new room. Please consider this the BEFORE picture as I have not yet done one thing. I plan on spending my summer designing my new room and then about two weeks decorating and rearranging things. All this while teaching summer school and grad school! I must be nuts!

This is how it looks from previous year...lots to do!

This is my room BEFORE I move in....a bit messy.

And if a new job is not enough change I also am finally in my new house! Here is a picture of my bare naked kitchen. Pretty bland huh????? Just need some time and dinero ($$) and I will spice it up a bit! All in time......
My new kitchen island ---so boring for now...blah

June Currently

Oh, it's already the 3rd of June and the last day of school is the day after tomorrow and there is so much to do but I really wanted to participate in the June currently thanks to Farley's Oh Boy 4th Grade because I love reading what everyone is up here goes..

Listening--ugh I really really hate trampolines and go figure we move into our new house and low and behold the kid behind us have a trampoline! They just make me so nervous!

I am so excited that there is only 1 1/2 days of school BUT I am in grad school and I start on Monday so that leaves me a teeny tiny 4 days off....( sad face)

I really am going to try to squeeze in a mini vacation but I still need to book the room and I am so busy wrapping up the end of the year that I have not even made a reservation.

3 vacay essentials: sunscreen, bathing suit, running shoes! ( I know it's only 3 but I am going to sneak in a margarita by the pool!)

Ever since I was hired to teach middle school next year  I just can't stop thinking about how my class will arranged next year so it was PERFECT timing that upon reading The Bender Bunch Special Ed blog I stumbled across Joy in 6th linky party.... participate in this linky here goes....

Leaving my student with even one minute of down time is bad news! Since my student come in at different times and some have breakfast I need to create some morning work that both meet s their needs as well as their academic level. I have started to create some stamping pages for my kiddos that are not able to write.

I started a "data wall" earlier this year that you can see on my blog and OMG did it help! It really was an excellent visual to help remind me to remain focused on goals and take data.

Since I do an end of year video I usually end up taking a bazillion photos the last month of school but the best part of the video is seeing the kids change over the course of the year so I am going to set up a reminder to take candid photos all year long.

With my class  I SOOOO need volunteers. An extra set of hands is crucial and I plan to make a it a priority to find quality volunteers to ensure my students get the most out of our community based outings.

Well, there you go! Feel free to join in and share some of your ideas for what you will be doing differently next year. :) I love love love to hear new ideas.

Field Day 2013!

These are a few pictures from Field Day yesterday! It was so much fun and I had some wonderful volunteers that were amazing! We have such a great team that really goes above and beyond to make sure that my class is included.

This day was a success but lately I have been having some issues with my school including my students in activities they should absolutely be included in. This makes me wonder if other schools experience the same thing and how they handle it. Here is my example.......

So, all of the 5th graders were invited to a training to prepare them for the transition to middle school yet the person in charge failed to invite my 3 5th graders. This really upset me. They are more than capable of attending and comprehending and need this just as much if not more than all of the other kids. Grrr....made me so mad. Crazy thing is before I taught special ed, I wonder if I had the same thought process? Special ed has taught me and continues to teach me every day. I feel like I really need to advocate for these kids. I would love to hear how others handle this type of situation.

Sunday FUN-day Freebie!

Ok- so after a few weeks off due to grad school and car accident I am finally back with my Sunday FUN-day freebie!

Special Education Morning Work Samples

Here are a few pages of a packet I am working on. This will be ideal for students learning to write or unable to write due to a physical disability. Students can use letter tiles or stamps to complete or they can write in the space provided. Just click on the link and you can download from my TPT store for free. :)

May Currently!

I have really really been missing my blog due to grad school, moving, and just plain life! But I am back for now with a fun new May Currently thanks to Farley ! Ok here goes....

Why do I feel like I am always listening to my dogs bark? Oh yea, that's right that's because that is ALL they do!!!

I am loving that after 6 months waiting for this house to be built I am finally moving this week! I am so excited to have a new house.

I really really need a vacation! I know people always say that but this year has been so incredibly hectic I don't remember ever being soooo stressed! So, this is where I am booking a few nights the day after school gets out!

Is this place gorgeous or what???? The best part is that it's only 15 minutes away! I live in Vegas and this is at Lake Las Vegas! It is so nice and fun for the kids! There is a slide down the ountain and kayaks and a spa! yeah!!!!

But BEFORE I think of putting on a bathing suit I am NEEDING to get to the gym! With this crazy schedule I have been missing the gym more than I care to admit. Boo!

As for my bucket list, I start a new job next year and it's middle school which is totally new to me so I really need to be extra prepared this year which is what I plan on doing in my "spare" time. Oh, I am also teaching summer school in July so not sure how this is going to happen.

Writing For Everyone!

So, first of all I have been away from my blog for a few weeks thanks to one car accident and a crazy class at UNLV that just about sent me over the edge! It's been a hectic few weeks but I'm out of school for about a month so things should be back to normal....I HOPE!

Anyway, here are just a few ways I include everyone in my class during writing. Most of my kids are able to write but I have one with CP and another with very low muscle tone who can not grasp a pencil very well. I love the Intellikeys which is in the photo above. I have my student write whatever the rest of the class is but he used the keyboard as it is easier for him to push the buttons than use a pencil. My other little guy is using stamps. I have to make the paper ahead of time but it's not that much work. Finally, the rest of my class is LOVING my new "sentence helpers". They have really helped my student become more independent in their writing. I sell them in my store for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. You can find them here.....Sentence Helpers.

Happy Sunday and I will be back to post my Sunday Fun-Day Freebie soon!!!

Easy Sentence Strip Center Idea!

These index strip cards are an excellent center idea! Before cutting the strips I write up to 5 different complete sentences. Then I cut them and put them in a plastic bag. The students sort the cards by color which helps them form a correct sentence. Once the sentences are formed they re write the sentences on a piece of paper.

Guest Blogger

I am excited to say that I will be a guest blogger for Autism Classroom News   this Sunday. The topic will be ULS (Unique Learning Systems).

In other news I start my next class tomorrow at UNLV so life will be pretty hectic for the next three weeks!

Oh, and out of the blue I have an interview tomorrow for a new position. Same area of teaching but it would be in middle school. I'm excited but nervous. Yikes!

Classroom Reward Behavior System!

Classroom Store

This is my little classroom "store". I use it for a variety of purposes but mainly it is one of the positive reinforcers for my students. Just to the left you see a blue chart with green tickets. It hard to see but the student names are on their so I didn't want it to be totally visible. Students are able to earn tickets at any time. I chose this method because in years past I found that letting them keep the tickets in their desk was too much of a distraction .This was with myself or the student can place the ticket next to their name and then it's no longer in their desk to fidget with! :) It's hard to see but just to the left of the shoe holder ( store) are numbers. If they have 3 tickets they choose from the top row, 5 tickets the next row, and so on. Of course the high price items are on the bottom. So far in using this system I have taught my students name recognition, counting, making purchases all while at the same time reinforcing positive behavior! What I never expected to happen was for my students to discover the concept of saving. I have a few students who have chosen NOT to spend their tickets on Friday and have decided to save their tickets one more week in order to be able to "buy" and item that costs more tickets. What a break through! Typically my kids are all about immediate gratification but some are actually opting to wait until they have enough! Love it! I found this shoe holder at Bed Bath and Beyond. They do have them at Walmart but when I went the holder was not totally transparent and it was important to me that the plastic was clear so that they could see the items inside.

Class Data Bulletin Board

Hello! Well,  I know it's the end of the year but I finally took my data forms and made a "data wall". This is only my first version and I am already planning what next year's wall will look like. Each of my student's has an IEP and per my principal they all have behavior plans ( even though I don't really think they all need one). So.....having 8 clip boards with data sheets is just NOT practical. I use my IEP Complete Binder Kit for Goals & Benchmark data but I decided to make this wall so that even my SPTA's ( paraprofessionals) will be able to jot down behavioral data. I put each of their pictures on their as well as their names and then a few different types of functional data sheets in each file for easy access. Some require data to be taken daily while others only once a week. Either way it's hard to miss and keeps me on track with data. I think next year I will also add copies of goals and benchmarks in here so that if anyone else is in my room they can quickly see what my students levels are and possibly work on their goals with them. Anyway, this is my first attempt at a behavioral data wall and I'de love to see what others have put together. Have a great week!

The names and faces were blurred or blacked out for confidentiality.

April Currently!!!

Ok I'm linking up with Oh Boy 4th grade! for the April Linky! I love these!

One of my dogs CONSTANTLY LICKS EVERYTHING! I don't know why it bothers me so much but it's annoying. He actually licked through my leather couch! Grrrrr....

I drove by the construction site and my new house is almost done! I can't wait to move. Now all I need to do is buy some new furniture because I refuse to bring this furniture (crap) with me. Seriously I'm not bringing it....

Ugh....happy yet sad it's back to the grind tomorrow. Not just for me but for my kids too which my drill sergeant mom is back to get the troops ready in the morning...good times....NOT

Never enough time...I'm in grad school ( on top of everything else) plus I like to train and I just never seem to find enough time....How am I going to go on vacation with this schedule?

As far as my TPT or blog advice I am new so who am I to give advice BUT.....I do know that patience is essential. Just when things seem slow suddenly things perk up. Its peeks and valleys for sure. :-)
